BIMP-EAGA
(Brunei Darussalam – Indonesia - Malaysia- Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area)
BIMP-EAGA was launched in 1994 under the initiative of former Philippine President Fidel Ramos.
BIMP-EAGA aims to narrow the development gap and generate balanced and inclusive growth by promoting trade, investment, and tourism among the four countries.
The EAGA region covers the entire Sultanate of Brunei Darussalam; the provinces of Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku and West Papua of Indonesia; the states of Sabah, Sarawak and the Federal Territory of Labuan in Malaysia; and the Island of Mindanao and the provice of Palawan in the Philippines.
The EAGA region is geographically large, covering 62.4% of the land area of the four countries.
Yet it is sparsely populated and economically underdeveloped, accounting for 18.3% of GDP, 18.5% of the working-age population, and 24.5% of total merchandise trade within the BIMP.

Borneois the world’s third largest island, comprising the territories of three countries – Brunei, Malaysia, and Indonesia – and is home to the world’s third largest rainforest, along with the Amazon in South America and the Congo Basin in Africa.
The Sulu-Sulawesi Sea, or Coral Triangle, has one of the highest concentrations of marine biodiversity in the world.
The main economic corridors within BIMP-EAGA are the West Borneo Economic Corridor and the Greater Sulu-Sulawesi Economic Corridor.
The West Borneo Economic Corridor is BIMP-EAGA’s oil and gas corridor that encompasses Brunei, West Kalimantan of Indonesia, and Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysia. As a major export region for crude oil and natural gas of BIMP-EAGA, it has a well-established transport infrastructure and linkages from Pontianak in West Kalimantan to Kuching, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam.
The Greater Sulu-Sulawesi Economic Corridor is a maritime corridor that covers the regions of North Sulawesi of Indonesia, Sabah of Malaysia, and the island of Mindanao of the Philippines. It is located in the heart of the Coral Triangle, the center of the world’s highest concentration of marine biodiversity.
